I designed the multicons for social media such as SMS, facebook but mainly for twitter. While I was writing my thesis in which I briefly discussed emoticons, I made the conclusion that many emoticons had a very casual look: a yellow circle with a black face. I realized that twitter had no emoticons. I examined the limitations (concerning a limit of 140 characters) of twitter, and how the emoticons could be used. Because of the character limit I wanted to include pictograms and ideographs. This is very pivotal for the appearance of the multicons. You can draw simpel in many different ways, this can be very graphical, pixel-like or even childish. I made the mulitcons just a little bit ‘awkward’. I think it is important when people send a SMS or twitter message, people get the idea that the message actually comes from a person. Many icons on the internet are very graphical and impersonal and they strongly refer to computers. The multicons look like they made with a pin. Besides that, I wanted the multicons to look like a sans typeface so the typography and the multicons would interact and fit with each other. The 'PWN' accepted the idea and wrote out a pitch to different agencies. My farther drew his design on a day when he was relaxing at is home on the beach. His idea was chosen to be the best and from that moment my father was allowed to run and realize project. Later he suggested the idea to place directions-signs on the top of the tower that point to various positions in the area and positions outside the Netherlands. The PWN was enthusiastic about the idea and my father and the PWN gave me the opportunity to design the indicators. During the realisation my father got cancer but he was able to finish the tower. The tower was officially opened by the Mayor of Heemskerk in March 2011. The official name of the tower is: the Kruisberg tower but all his friends and family call it: "t Torentje van Nico" (Nico's tower). A few moths after the official opening my farther passed away at September the seventieth, 2011. This is a special project for me. It is not only project I can finish where my father stopped. It is also a project where our specialties came together.
